#11 Sustainable Strawberry

Did you know this about the strawberry?

The strawberry is a delicate fruit with a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. Its juicy texture and fragrant aroma make it incredibly versatile: delicious when eaten raw, but also irresistible in desserts, salads, or even paired with balsamic vinegar or black pepper. The strawberry dares you to think beyond just whipped cream.

The strawberry isn’t a real fruit
Even though we think of the strawberry as a fruit, botanically speaking, it actually isn’t. The red, juicy part we eat is technically a swollen flower base. The real fruits are the tiny yellow seeds you see on the outside. On average, a single strawberry has about 200 seeds. Each of these is an individual seed that forms from a fertilized flower and has the potential to grow into a new plant. Unlike most fruits like apples or cherries where the seeds are inside, the strawberry wears its seeds on the outside. Pretty unique, right?

Rich in Vitamin C
Strawberries aren’t just delicious — they’re also incredibly healthy. They contain more vitamin C than the same amount of oranges. Just a handful of strawberries (about 8–10 berries) provides more than the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. They’re also packed with antioxidants, which help protect your body from harmful external influences.

A Symbol of Love
With their bright red color and heart-like shape, strawberries have long symbolized love, romance, and purity. In the past, they were even served at weddings, believed to bring fertility and happiness.

Plants That ‘Talk’
Strawberry plants can communicate with each other though not in the way we speak. When a plant is attacked by insects, it can release specific scent compounds that serve as a warning to nearby plants. These neighbors can then "prepare" by producing their own defense chemicals. It’s a fascinating example of how alive and intelligent nature truly is.
