Duurzame Doeners #14 Pumpkin

Autumn hero with a soft bite

More than 7,000 years old and still hip and happening in our kitchen! We’re talking about the pumpkin. This orange hero was cultivated as a staple food by the Mayas and Aztecs thousands of years ago. Botanically speaking, the pumpkin is actually a fruit - just like the tomato and avocado. Yet we eat it as a vegetable in savory dishes. Today, it’s an essential in any autumn kitchen. With its warm orange color and soft, nutty flavor, pumpkin instantly brings coziness to your plate. But this autumn hero has even more to offer!

A real vitamin bomb
Pumpkin is packed with beta-carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A - great for your eyes, skin and immune system. It also contains vitamins C and E, as well as iron and fiber. That makes pumpkin not just delicious, but a smart choice if you want to eat healthily. Low in calories, rich in nutrients, perfect for a vital, energetic autumn.

From soup to pie: endless possibilities
Pumpkin is a true chameleon in the kitchen. It fits right into both savory and sweet dishes. Think creamy pumpkin soup, a spicy curry, roasted pumpkin cubes with rosemary, or even a smooth pumpkin pie. The seeds are little treasures too: roasted, they make a crunchy snack full of minerals. And did you know that with some varieties, you can even eat the skin? It saves both time and food waste.

“Pumpkins are naturally long-lasting”

Sustainable by nature
Pumpkins love open soil and don’t need much to thrive. No heated greenhouses, no exotic transport - just our Dutch soil, fresh air, and sunlight. That makes pumpkins a climate-friendly choice. They’re also naturally long-lasting - up to several months - so there’s less waste. Organic growers take it a step further: through crop rotation, composting, and flower borders, they nurture healthy soil and boost biodiversity. In this way, pumpkins contribute to agriculture that both nourishes and restores.

The taste of autumn
